The new Lincoln MKZ Hybrid offers relief at the fuel pump without premium price. In confused times like these, with gasoline prices through the roof, I generally advise against leaping for the familiar hybrid life preserver. Hybrids typically exact a $5,000 or so premium for their technology and expensive battery packs. Moreover, the new 40 mpg compacts are taking over the market.
But then there comes the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid that looks to be an exception to the rule. Lincoln charges no premium for its hybrid. The MKZ Hybrid gets 41 mpg city and 36mpg highway and carries the same base price of just under $35,000 that the standard version costs. Consumers have taken notice as the sales rate for the MKZ Hybrid is up over 20% through April.
As in the Prius, the MKZ's gas engine shuts off at stops. Its electric motor gets the car going again, with the gas engine taking over acceleration demands get too great.
